Seattle to Nashville: The Relocation Road Trip Plan

One-way, ~12 driving/sightseeing days (2 buffer days built into a 2-week window), hitting Missoula, Yellowstone, Salt Lake City, Mount Rushmore, Badlands, and Chicago before landing in Nashville for good.

This drops Denver entirely — it turned out to be a detour, not a shortcut. The direct Salt Lake City → Mount Rushmore run (via Rock Springs and Casper, WY) is actually ~255 miles shorter than routing through Denver. Every day above is capped under 8 hours of driving, and the two biggest hauls (Badlands → Chicago, Chicago → Nashville) get their own dedicated days rather than being crammed onto the back of a park day.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 — Seattle to Missoula, MT

Drive: ~7h 20min, 475 mi via I-90 E

Leave in the morning, not the evening — this is your longest single driving day, so treat it as a pure travel day. I-90 across Washington and the Idaho panhandle is easy, fast driving.

• Stay: Missoula — La Quinta Inn & Suites Missoula (~$110–130/night) or budget option Motel 6 Missoula (~$70–85/night). Downtown Missoula has good food if you arrive with energy left — Le Petit Outre or the Iron Horse Brew Pub.

Day 2 — Missoula to West Yellowstone, MT

Drive: ~4h 20min, 265 mi via I-90 E then MT-287 S (through Butte and Ennis)

Short driving day on purpose — you’ll arrive by early-to-mid afternoon with daylight to spare. This is your base for the next two nights, so no need to repack the car until Day 5.

• Stay (3 nights): West Yellowstone — Explorer Cabins at Yellowstone (~$150–190/night, nicer, worth it if you want real beds and a fireplace after two big driving days) or budget Stage Coach Inn (~$110–140/night) or Yellowstone Moose Creek Cabins (~$95–120/night). Book early — West Yellowstone fills up fast in summer.
• Evening: If you arrive with light left, the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in town is a relaxed first taste of the park.

Day 3 — Yellowstone: The Geyser Day (Lower Loop)

Base: West Yellowstone (no hotel change)

This is a sightseeing day, not a driving day — total driving inside the park is under 2 hours; everything else is boardwalks and overlooks.

• Old Faithful + Upper Geyser Basin (40–50 min from West Yellowstone) — allow 90 minutes minimum. Don’t just watch Old Faithful; walk the basin for Castle, Grand, and Riverside Geysers.
• Grand Prismatic Spring — walk the Overlook Trail (~0.6 mi) for the full aerial view. Go before 9am or after 6pm to dodge the worst parking crush.
• West Thumb Geyser Basin (optional, evening) — geysers right on Yellowstone Lake’s shore, usually quiet.

Day 4 — Yellowstone: The Canyon Day (Upper Loop)

Base: West Yellowstone (no hotel change)

• Norris Geyser Basin (~1h from West Yellowstone) — the park’s hottest, most unpredictable thermal area. Allow 60–90 minutes.
• Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone + Artist Point — the 308-ft Lower Falls in a 1,000-ft colored canyon. Allow 45–60 minutes.
• Hayden Valley — bison country between Canyon and the interior; you’ll likely slow for a bison jam, which is part of the experience.
• Optional, if you have energy: push north to Mammoth Hot Springs (~1.5h from West Yellowstone) for the travertine terraces — this makes it a longer day (~5–6h round trip driving), so only do it if you’re not feeling worn down from Day 3.

Day 5 — West Yellowstone to Salt Lake City, UT

Drive: ~5h, 320 mi via US-20 S through Idaho Falls and Pocatello

A clean, moderate travel day. You’ll arrive in Salt Lake City by mid-afternoon with the evening free.

• Evening: Walk Temple Square — it’s free, well-lit at night, and an easy way to stretch your legs after driving.
• Stay: Salt Lake City — Little America Hotel (~$140–170/night, a genuinely nice downtown property, worth the splurge for one night before a long push east) or budget Crystal Inn Downtown (~$100–120/night).

Day 6 — Salt Lake City to Casper, WY

Morning: Salt Lake City sightseeing (2–3 hours) Drive: ~6h 30min, 412 mi via I-80 E then WY-220/US-26

Spend the morning in SLC before you go — Temple Square in daylight, the Utah State Capitol (free, great views), or a walk around Liberty Park. Then head east across southern Wyoming. This stretch is open, quiet high desert — fill up on gas before you leave SLC.

• Stay: Casper, WY — Fairfield Inn & Suites Casper (~$130–150/night) or budget Motel 6 Casper (~$75–90/night). Casper has a genuinely good downtown for a small city — check out FireRock Steakhouse or Eggington’s for breakfast the next morning.

Day 7 — Casper to Mount Rushmore / Rapid City, SD

Drive: ~3h 30min, ~225 mi via I-25 N then US-18/US-16 E

A short, easy driving day — you’ll be checked into your hotel by early afternoon with plenty of time to see Rushmore itself in daylight and catch the evening lighting ceremony.

• Afternoon: Visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial — walk the Presidential Trail (easy, 0.6 mi loop) for the full view from below the faces.
• Evening: Stay for the lighting ceremony (nightly in summer, ~9pm) — it’s genuinely worth staying for.
• Stay: Keystone or Rapid City, SD — K Bar S Lodge in Keystone (~$140–170/night, walkable to Rushmore, best location) or budget Grand Gateway Hotel in Rapid City (~$100–130/night).

Day 8 — Black Hills Day → Badlands National Park

Drive: ~1h 45min total, 95 mi (Rushmore area → Badlands)

This is your fullest sightseeing day of the whole trip — Black Hills in the morning, Badlands by evening.

• Morning: Custer State Park — drive the Wildlife Loop Road (bison, pronghorn, burros) and Needles Highway (dramatic granite spires, tight tunnels — don’t rush this).
• Midday: Crazy Horse Memorial — the mountain carving is still in progress; the visitor center and Native American cultural exhibits are worth an hour even if you don’t linger long.
• Late afternoon: Drive to Badlands National Park (~1h 45min from the Rushmore area). Golden-hour light on the Badlands formations is spectacular — try to time your arrival for late afternoon.
• Stay: Wall, SD (right at the park’s edge) — Badlands Inn (~$120–150/night, inside the park boundary, best sunrise access) or budget Ranch Motel in Wall (~$80–100/night). Wall Drug is a classic, slightly kitschy must-stop for dinner or a milkshake.

Day 9 — Badlands Sightseeing → Sioux Falls, SD

Morning: Badlands sightseeing (2–3 hours) Drive: ~5h 15min, ~350 mi via I-90 E

• Morning: Drive the Badlands Loop Road (SD-240) — stop at Door, Window, and Notch Trail (all short, under a mile). The eroded rock formations look like nothing else on this trip.
• Drive east: I-90 through the rest of South Dakota is flat and fast — a good day to just put on a podcast and cover ground.
• Stay: Sioux Falls, SD — Hampton Inn Sioux Falls (~$130–150/night) or budget La Quinta Inn Sioux Falls (~$90–110/night). If you have energy, Falls Park downtown (free, lit at night) is a nice quick stop.

Day 10 — Sioux Falls to Chicago, IL

Drive: ~7h 45min, ~500 mi via I-90 E through Minnesota and Wisconsin

Your longest day since Day 1 — but still under 8 hours. Minnesota and Wisconsin farmland goes by quickly on I-90.

• Stay (2 nights): Chicago — budget-friendly options near the Loop or South Loop: Freehand Chicago (~$130–160/night, good design, central) or Hampton Inn Chicago South Loop (~$140–170/night). If you want to save more, hotels near O’Hare run ~$90–110/night but add a commute into downtown.

Day 11 — Chicago: Full Sightseeing Day

No driving today.

A full rest-and-explore day before your final push to Nashville — you’ve earned it after the last three travel days.

• Millennium Park — Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), free and iconic.
• Chicago Riverwalk + Architecture River Cruise — genuinely one of the best ways to see the city; book ahead in summer.
• Deep-dish pizza — Lou Malnati’s or Pequod’s for the classic experience.
• Navy Pier in the evening if you want lake views and a Ferris wheel.

Day 12 — Chicago to Nashville, TN

Drive: ~7h 10min, 472 mi via I-65 S through Indianapolis and Louisville

Your final day. I-65 is a straightforward, well-maintained interstate the whole way.

• Optional stop: Indianapolis (halfway point) for lunch, or Louisville if you want a longer break and a taste of Kentucky before Tennessee.
• Arrival: Welcome to Nashville — you’re home.

Buffer days

You’ve got 12 active days built into a 2-week window, which leaves 2 flexible days. Good places to use them:

• An extra night in Yellowstone if weather or crowds slow you down (roads can still be affected by snow into early June).
• An extra night in Chicago if you want more time before the final push.
• A cushion at the end, arriving in Nashville with a day to spare before you need to be moved in — much better than arriving exhausted the same day you need to unload a truck.

Budget notes

• Where to spend a little more: Little America in Salt Lake City and Explorer Cabins in West Yellowstone are worth the upgrade — both come after long driving stretches and set up the next day well.
• Where to save: Casper, Sioux Falls, and the O’Hare-area Chicago hotels are all solid budget picks without sacrificing much.
• Fuel: Roughly $450–550 total for the full one-way trip in a mid-size car averaging 28–30 mpg, at current gas prices.
• Park fees: $35 at Yellowstone’s gate (7-day pass) covers you; Badlands is $30/vehicle (7-day) separately, or get the $80 America the Beautiful annual pass if you think you’ll hit another national park within the year — it pays for itself after two parks.
